What to expect during a pregnancy ultrasound:

A sonographer will perform your ultrasound. You will be asked to lie on an examination table and to lift your top to your chest and lower your skirt or trousers to the top of your hips, to expose your stomach.

The sonographer will put a gel on your stomach to ensure good contact between your skin and the machine. They will then pass a transducer (probe) over your skin which sends out ultrasound waves and picks them up again when they bounce back. A black and white picture of your baby will be shown on a small screen.

The duration of your scan depends on the complexity of the examination requested. Generally, straightforward ultrasound scans take around 10 to 20 minutes to complete. Having the scan does not hurt, but the sonographer may have to push firmly in some areas in order to see the deeper structures.
Sometimes, a transvaginal (internal) ultrasound needs to be done. This is more likely in early pregnancy (when your womb is still quite small) or if a better view of the edge of the placenta is needed. Consent is always asked before this is performed.

Depending on the position of your baby, the images you get may be affected. Fetal position can make it difficult to get a clear view, you might not be able to get a clear scan. In some cases, the sonographer may need to ask you to move or change positions to try and get a better angle. If the baby remains in a challenging position, a follow-up scan may be scheduled.

The accuracy of your scan depends on the Sonographer’s ability to concentrate without frequent interruptions.  While Sonographers strive to provide explanations of what appears on the screen, there are times when they must remain silent to dedicate their full attention to the scan.

To ensure we can fully focus on your medical needs, a maximum of two support people are permitted to attend the examination.

If you have children accompanying you, please ensure they are supervised by a designated adult during your scan. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Sometimes we are able to see the gender of your baby, however depending on baby’s position, it is not always possible

Can I talk to the Sonographer about my scan?

During your pregnancy ultrasound, our experienced sonographers focus on capturing clear, high-quality images. Please note that sonographers do not always provide results or medical information during the scan. Sometimes, your images will be carefully reviewed by our expert radiologists, who will prepare a detailed report. Your results will then be sent to your doctor or midwife, who will discuss the findings with you at your follow-up appointment.
